South Asia Democracy Watch Demands Yasin Malik’s Immediate Release

(Dallas, USA, June 11, 2022)  South Asia Democracy Watch (SDW), a non-profit organization in Washington DC and Dallas, Texas, has strongly condemned sentencing Kashmir’s popular leader Yasin Malik to life imprisonment by an Indian court.

The India Sessions Court of New Delhi convicted him on May 25, of many offenses, including the allegation that he provided funds to terrorists in the territory. He was arbitrarily sentenced to life in prison in addition to various fines and other lesser prison terms without a fair trial.

In a recent statement, the SDW Board of Directors demanded Yasin Malik’s immediate release as there is a real threat to his life while he is incarcerated: “The so-called trial of Yasin Malik by an Indian kangaroo court was a mockery of justice. After his arrest by Indian authorities on February 29, 2019, on trumped-up charges, he was shifted to the notorious Tihar Jail on March 10, 2019. Malik was overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the fabricated charges, fake evidence, and more than fifty anonymous ‘witnesses’ against him.”

SDW has demanded that the Indian authorities quash the illegal conviction of Yasin Malik that was improperly obtained through a dubious and staged trial and set him free, and “the political witch hunt of this brave, popular and popular and peaceful freedom fighter must be stopped.”

The organization has appealed to the Indian Government and the international community to honor and respect the self-determination and freedom of the subjugated people of Jammu & Kashmir.

Yasin Malik, a longstanding Kashmiri leader, has been the chief of the Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), the largest political movement of Jammu & Kashmir fighting for the human rights and sovereignty of this oppressed territory. In 1994 he renounced violence as means to achieve his goal of an independent and free Kashmir state.
